The idea of “paranormal” is so broad and can mean so many different things, that when approaching this sub-genre of romance literature, one might be curious about what exactly it might cover. First of all, when one thinks of “the paranormal” it can cover everything from vampires and demons, to people with superhuman powers or gift, to just about everything in between. The reason that we developed this page was to address those questions and provide some insight into this sub-genre. Now, to begin, we will mention one distinction that we have made on our site, and which is made in other places as well. While vampires technically can fall into the paranormal genre, on this site, we have discussed vampire romance books in their own separate article.
Our goal by doing that was to hopefully make it easier to quickly find the exact type of novel that one is seeking. Some other places will also separate the works this way, while some others will lump vampires in with the paranormal category.
Ok, so now that that is straightened out, what can one expect when they crack open a new paranormal work? To be very, very general, the one key thread that can be found in pretty much all is that element of something which is not part of the real world, something which stretches reality. To be more specific, it can be something as subtle as people with psychic powers, to things as dramatic as fairies and angels. Overall, these works tend to be darker, but not always, there are also some more light-hearted options.
The worlds which these characters inhabit can be very diverse, from lands and places which do not resemble our own, to those set in the future, to simply the contemporary world. They dwell everywhere from the air, to the forests to even the seas.
With a general idea of what one will find in paranormal romances, now it is time to take the plunge and find one that appeals to you.
